STOP! HAMMER TIME! #1 - FreeBSD 6.2 is out

It’s time to get our CPUs heating up our offices and datacenters.

FreeBSD has officially released its FreeBSD 6.2 version of its operating system

So what’s this fuss all about? It’s the little nervousness to see our favorite operating system getting an upgrade. It’s all about the download and compile time it takes to finally see

FreeBSD rip.reflexivel.com 6.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE #0: Mon Jan 15 00:13:06 WET 2007     root@rip.reflexivel.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/REFLEXIVEL  i386

in our command lines.

Of course it’s not about this because it takes some work and a while to finally get this. It’s about its new features:

  • freebsd-update provides officially supported binary updates for security fixes and errata patches;
  • Experimental support for CAPP security event auditing;
  • OpenBSM audit command line tool suite and library;
  • KDE updated to 3.5.4, GNOME updated to 2.16.1;
  • Disk integrity protection and authentication added to geli
  • New amdsmb(4), enc(4) ipmi(4), nfsmb(4), stge(4) drivers;
  • IPFW packet tagging;
  • Linux emulation support for sysfs

  • Many driver updates including em(4), arcmsr(4), ath(4), bce(4), ata(4), and iwi(4);
  • jail program now supports a -s option to specify a jail’s securelevel.
  • Security event auditing is now supported in the new FreeBSD kernel

Looks like Apple can now announce Leopard.

I was looking into the FreeBSD Foundation donors the $100k that’s left to achieve the $200k 2006 goal. And it’s tax-deductible!!! Even I already contributed!!!!!!

Well, back on the subject and to finish. Don’t forget to read the detailed release notes before updating. And if you’re going to install FreeBSD 6.2 you can download the isos, but please read the Installation Notes and the FreeBSD Handbook

And that’s all for now. Have big phun!
